Young people need youth clubs and music activities to keep them out of trouble, says trip hop musician Tricky.

The Bristol musician, whose unlikely cover of the Kylie song Slow is out next week, says his own life was changed by discovering music and thinks all kids need the chance to be creative.

Asked by the Guardian Guide about his rumoured links to Samantha Cameron, wife of Tory leader David, Tricky confirmed the pair used to frequent the same pub in Bristol when Samantha was a student. He then went on to offer some words of wisdom to her husband.

"I'd like to tell him my life was changed by music and by youth clubs," said Tricky. "There's nothing now. Council estates are just entertainment material now - all cop shows and Asbo families. Cameron can help me take my portable studio in there and help kids create something."
